4 Ways to Carry A Person Around

Of all the ways you can carry a person around, piggyback riding should be one of the more innocent ways to do so. Unless you are Minister Ong Ye Kung, in which case it is inappropriate. So here are 4 more ways to carry someone around, and how to incorporate it into your workout.

First the video!

Equipment
I would recommend starting this on softer grounds. Stadium tracks and the beach are great place to start. Pounding your foot on hard cement ground with additional weight on the back is not very wise.

Fireman's Carry
Made popular as a technique by fireman to move another person out of harm's way. But not really made use of by modern fireman mainly because the heat and smoke is greater higher up, and it's not suitable if someone sustained a spinal injury. This lift allows you to lift the most and go the furthest. Great for training your work capacity. Also check out this video of old school Judo training where students of Masahiko Kimura do squats with their partner in a fireman's carry.

Lift your partner across both shoulders while securing his/her arms and legs. Secure and walk.

Bear Hug Carry
This carry will tax your pectoral muscles the most, as you struggle to maintain an isometric hold on your partner. As this carry compresses your chest as well, breathing become a more difficult task.

Run your arms across your partner's leg and lift. Try not to interlock your fingers, as it will make this lift easier. Secure and walk.

Princess Carry
Also known as the bridal carry. Your biceps and lats will be the hardest hit here. The isometric hold in the Princess carry require that you build a strong shelf with your lats and biceps to hold your partner This is a good way to train for the Atlas carry in Spartan racing.

Build a strong shelf with your arms and allow your partner to rest across your arms. Secure and walk.

Shoulder Sit
Now that your arms are busted, time to work your core. Due to the high position of your partner, this exercise will tax your core as you maintain stability while moving forward. Made famous by the Japanese female wrestlers who lifted up their coach like he is nothing at all and did victory laps around the wrestling arena.

Squat low and allow your partner to sit comfortable on your shoulder. Once secure, stand up straight and walk.

Regression and Progression
Work with partners of different shapes and sizes. Go for longer distance with lighter partners and shorter ones with heavier partners.

Carries can be incorporated into each training session. A good way is simply to do some carries with a partner at the end of your workout, to work on your work capacity and add some additional volume.
